When they’ve spent the earlier money

Dear Oxford. The biggest reason I’m not paying for your app is because I already paid. Years ago. Apparently your current management has forgotten. I thought enough of the product to pay for speech and such features in the past but for a while, now, all I get are pop-up ads and reminders for new subscription models. (Was hoping some system might remember by now but apparently not.) I will teach myself a lesson and delete all apps and see how long I can go without. That’ll teach me.

Paid for app and I get full page adverts

Full page adverts! Why did I waste money buying app!! Poor coding leading it to stopping!

Subscription Only! Overpriced!

Subscription Only! Overpriced!

No

I have previously paid for the full dictionary and have used it for years, including the thesaurus. Now, this update has “added new features” which include removing access to the thesaurus I paid for outright and requiring a subscription. A feature that literally worked last week is now unavailable. It’s also apparently become spyware, using identifiers to track its users. Abusive practices are NOT what I’m looking for in a dictionary. I won’t be back, even if this change is rolled-back, as it’s obvious that I can’t trust the company producing this app.

Oxford Dictionary

Learning different words that goes back to the root words

All. The. Words.

You need this app. Get it.

Too many Ads

Too many Ads

So nice

Love it! It’s the best!

A Trust Worthy Dictionary on my Phone

I use the free version and so far it is exactly what I needed. I love it.

My favorite app

I love this app. I always have. I’ll tell anyone who will listen. Critical like Spotify and Google Maps

Infancy Literature Here

Don’t even waste your time! This app and the word available to discover within an hour inconceivably basic and fundamental foundation only one that burger fortify your understanding of anything other than the fact that you need something more advanced

Literally the BEST.

For so many reasons, I find it to be the best dictionary app, but especially for the note following the 2nd definition of "literally" (adv. inf.)! I hope they won't mind it if I quote, "In its standard use literally means ‘in a literal sense, as opposed to a non-literal or exaggerated sense’, as for example in ‘I told him I never wanted to see him again, but I didn't expect him to take it literally’. In recent years an extended use of literally (and also literal) has become very common, where literally (or literal) is used deliberately in non-literal contexts, for added effect, as in ‘they bought the car and literally ran it into the ground’. This use can lead to unintentional humorous effects (‘we were literally killing ourselves laughing’) and is not acceptable in formal contexts, though it is widespread." Widespread indeed are the misadventures of those who literally do not understand the words they choose. ;)

Not happy

It does not recognize many of the words that I enter, often pasted in from an article that I am reading even. Webster finds them; boo!!!

Expanding Horizon

I’ve been so stuck in my limited way of speaking…using the same describing words…cussing even, to fill in the blanks. I’m grateful for this app 👊🏻💯❤️‍🔥

Very well presented

You’d like the app version as much as you like the paper version. Font colors and font types are smartly used to present rich information in a manner that is very easy to follow. The app feels dated nevertheless.

Oxford dictionary I like it but I don’t like that they almost force you to buy the premium!

I don’t use this app often but when I do it is very helpful. The only thing I don’t like is they almost force you to pay for the premium package. It’s gets annoying. I dont use it enough to pay for that.

Admire

Thankful. 🙂

App freezes all the time!

App freezes every time I use it. I have a paid subscription, using it on iPhone 14. I read online that restoring the purchase solves the problem. I have done so and nothing has changed. Very frustrating!

I pay 40$ and still have to see ads!

For a dictionary ????

Unreasonably expensive

The free version is unusable with constant pop-up ads. There’s no flat fee to get rid of ads, instead, you must pay a ridiculous subscription fee. There are other apps with cheaper subscriptions or one-time fees. Next time I need Oxford, I’ll just the website.

Until I purchase a paper dictionary

I been reading Gwynne’s Grammar and it made me reconsider if I needed a dictionary. This is a nice app to use until I purchase a paper copy of the Oxford dictionary

The italics are too italicized

I love the dictionary but the font is too large and the italics are almost sliding off the page they are so slanted. It makes it hard to read because it’s such a stark contrast from the normal style text above it. We should be able to adjust the font size at minimal

App Update Traps Existing Users into Unwanted Subscription

I purchased this app a few years ago under a one-time purchase model. However, last year, they switched to a subscription-based model, automatically refreshing the app and forcing me to subscribe. They should honor their original commitment to existing customers instead of making them pay for the app again.

Love

I Love this app it’s helps me read, spell and do my homework

Good but …

… missing some words (even in the premium subscription), words that may not matter for many. For example, the word ‘haruspicate’, which appears in TS Eliot’s The Dry Salvages (V), was not found in this app (nor in Webster’s app) and was found on the web at a reliable source. There have been other examples such as this, rare but pertinent to writings of notable authors. As I said, rare. Yet annoying. That complaint aside, the etymologies given in the app are useful as well as are the pronunciations for the many words that do exist in their database. The word of the day feature doesn’t seem to be chosen too far (if at all) from common words. It would be nice to have random selection or a level of difficulty as an app preference.

Upgraded to premium but...

What a bummer! NO sound. Tried to cancel subscriptions but can’t even tell anymore which Oxford site I’m on! I am resigned to losing money and getting nothing in return… Ugh.

Expired in 1969

Mobi account page says my account expired Dec 31, 1969. Hangs sometimes. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling. No change. No feedback option in the app. Fail.

Dictionary

Would be better if there were not ads.

Ads make the app just about useless

I fully understand needing ads for revenue on free versions, but this is too much. To have ads that force you to watch for a certain amount of time before you can exit, and have them more often than every 40 seconds, makes it nearly impossible to use the app. Other dictionaries also provide deeper analysis of words and varied definitions Oxford is so reputable, too, so it’s very disappointing.

Review of Oxford Dictionary

The app is very useful however the majority of extra perks that the app offers are quite limited unless you buy the premium version which in my humble opinion is a waste of money. Overall the app is relatively simple to use and I will continue to enjoy it.

Terrible support

I paid for a lifetime subscription to premium a few years ago. I switched to a new phone and lost access. Sent multiple messages to support showing my receipt. Get automated replies promising they’d get back within 2 business days. But they just don’t. Basically I was robbed.

Not worth $40 a year

Merriam Webster has much longer definitions that dig deeper into the meanings of words with etymology, examples of usage, etc. It’s a shame that this online Oxford dictionary that costs a whopping $40/year fails to share the wealth of information that Oxford as a company has access to, but is failing to share in this stingy app.

Best dictionary

Great source of dictionary

Review for the Oxford Dictionary

Very important and informative!

Exceptional

I love to read, and I also love to know what I’m reading. I chose this app because a lot of the great minds use it. That’s enough for me ! Great app 🏆

Just what I needed

This is just what I needed, I just didn’t need it for long I guess.

Oxford Editors sold out to corporate greed!

Corporate editors made a decision to compromise learning and promote misunderstood words in that with the new download of the free app, they decided to have the user file through a myriad of advertisements only for the user to end up on a site that is now tracking you for supposed interests, but you accidentally clicked on the site because it looked like part of the screen! And in the end, the user has forgotten about the word that he wanted to look up! I’ve learned so many words over the years on this app and being bilingual, it’s important to me. So thank you for that! However, I’m concerned for the many people who will give up on defining words because they can’t afford it! Don’t download the app unless you’re willing to subscribe to it for whatever rate they’re asking of you. For me, at least for the time being, I’m pulling my “analog“ dictionary off of the shelf!

Charge without warning

I got charged $42.79 for a 1-year premium subscription today without signing up for it. That leaves a bad taste for sure.

Oxford University Dictionary of English Linguistics

Very great quality dictionaries very Good practical tool to enhance your vocabulary to a higher degree or standard

Oxford Dictionary

Nothing but the best! 5 stars, no less! The best dictionary on the planet, period.

Can't search examples or full text

I can't give this app more than one star (let alone consider subscribing) because it lacks a basic feature that dictionary apps had as long as 20 years ago: the ability to search for words that appear in example sentences or the full text of the dictionary. The app for the Collins unabridged English dictionary does offer this feature. For some reason, Oxford seems to have decided that users in 2025 only need to be able to search the list of headwords.

Salma Akter

Information Based

Audio doesn’t work

The Oxford German /English is supposed to play audio for the German word but this feature doesn’t work - or works only once and then stops working. (There is no problem in the settings) This is on iOS 18.1 but has been a problem on all previous iOS versions as well.

Oxford dictionary

Is good but it’s not working off line

Authoritative

The English language is lamentably complex; but Oxford is the authority. Forget the others. Let the experts handle it.

Ridiculous

I already pay the yearly subscription for the OED, and now they started to put ADS on the app? No, thank you.

pronouncing words

Charging to pronounce words in the dictionary. Come across as greedy.

L dictionary

Every app on the App Store is infected, not more than 8 years ago you could get a FREE app…that was actually FREE what they don’t get is they are making themselves obsolete. I can’t get pronunciation for a word without paying so what’s the point of trying to learn new words. I’ll just google it like I’ve always done and delete the stupid app, thanks for nothing 👍🏼 ur the snake eating his own tail but you don’t know that cause you won’t stop, MORE MORE MORE 🙄 Update: nice reply….to tell me to pay for the full version oh also it was written by a bot

Amazing

I never write reviews but I have been very devoted to bettering my speech. I have only been on the app for 3 minutes. The list from A-Z is amazing. And $0.77 is an amazing deal.
